Portrait and Street Photography
A compelling portrait may well be the most difficult image in photography to capture. A portrait defies easy definition. It is a window into the subjects soul, their story, the story of their surrounding. It can be all of those things, or none of them. An artist like Platon almost universally aims for simplicity. If it's not a matte background it's simple leading lines back to the subject. He frees his image of all distraction, so we are left with the subject's expression, and allow their eyes to grant us insight into who they are. At this point in time, my metric for a successful portrait in my own work is almost exclusively the eyes. If the eyes feel honest than I am excited to have gotten the image.
